The Myth of "Full Coverage"
There is a common misconception that because someone served our country, their healthcare is automatically taken care of.
The reality in Chicagoland is much starker.
Despite technically having access to the VA, 36% of veterans are denied access to benefits after applying. In the Chicago area alone, that leaves 96,859+ veterans without the support they were promised.
The gap creates a crisis:
Non-Traditional Families: Many veterans support family members who aren’t covered by standard benefits.
Single Parents: For the single-dad or single-mom veteran, the rigid flexibility of the VA system makes it nearly impossible to get to appointments while raising children.
The "Technician" Gap: Just like in the creative arts, we have the people, but we are missing the connection to the tools.
This is why FTD Ministry is hosting the Veterans Raising Children Vision Health Fair on February 28th. We aren't just hosting an event; we are filling a gap.
From "Blind" to "Blessed": The Impact of Community Care
Why does this matter? Because access to compassionate, immediate healthcare changes the trajectory of a life.
Take the story of Mercury.
When Mercury was born, her mother noticed something was different, she was born with gray eyes. The diagnosis from the first doctor was devastating: "Your baby is going to be blind." Instead of a treatment plan, the doctor handed her mother a pack of papers and said, "Go apply for social security."
But then they found a doctor who saw potential, not just the problem.
Dr. Kou didn't see a statistic; she saw a child. She told Mercury’s mother, "All is not lost," and laid out a surgical plan.
Mercury’s mother recalls the dignity she felt during that process:
"I never experienced any discrimination... I felt just like I got the care I needed."
Today, Mercury is a healthy, happy, very active child.
This is the heart of our Health Fair. We want every veteran, every child, and every member of our community who walks through our doors on February 28th to feel exactly what Mercury’s mother felt: Dignity. Hope. And a plan.

We Need All Hands on Deck
We have set an ambitious goal for February 28th to ensure no one is turned away:
🎯 150 Vision Screenings (with access to free glasses)
🎯 300 Medical Screenings
To make this happen, we need our community to step up.
It is not too late to join us.
Calling All Nurses (RN, LPN, CNA) We need medical professionals to help staff our screening stations. If you can take blood pressure, check vitals, or offer a comforting smile, we need you.
Calling All Vendors Do you have a service, a business, or a resource that can support these families? There are still spots available to set up a table and connect with our heroes.
Calling All Neighbors
If you can't be there, you can still help.
Share this newsletter with a nurse you know, or forward it to a veteran who needs support.
Let’s be the light that breaks forth like the dawn.
